Karachi Dock Labour Board (KDLB) has offered Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) to its workers in order to rationalise the surplus strength from 3,793 to 1,700 dockers. The government has chalked out a comprehensive plan for ports improvement and modernisation to reduce dwell time for cargo at lower charges.
Efficient ports can save $457 million annually to the national kitty. The required level of registered dock labours on KDLB roster shall be 1,700 workers. In order to rationalise the surplus strength from 3,793 workers to required level, the dock workers offered VRS with lump sum financial package inclusive of all their legal dues like gratuity, pension commutation and compensation in lieu of son's registration.
According to documents made available for Business Recorder, the VRS for workers having length of service below 10 years offered a lump sum amount of Rs 1,000,000 (Rs1 million).
-- The period of service 10 years and above, but below 20 years of worker could receive Rs 1,200,000 (Rs 1.2 million).
-- The workers having length of service 20 years and above; provided their remaining service to retirement on the age of 60 years is not less than two years could avail an offer of Rs 1,400,000 (Rs 1.4 million).
-- The registered dock workers who are due for retirement during the year 2008 shall be offered an additional amount of Rs 100,000 over and above their legal dues, provided they opt for early retirement before December 31, 2006.
