South Korea has issued tenders to buy a total 44,069 tonnes of US rice, an official at the state-run Korea Agro-Fisheries Trade Corp said on Tuesday. The tenders are to help South Korea meet part of its import quota under a World Trade Organisation agreement.
Electronic tenders were to be held between 10 am (0100 GMT) and noon (0300 GMT) on December 12. The agency, separately, has issued another tender to buy 8,350 tonnes of optional-origin long grain rice the official said.
South Korea is obliged to buy 245,922 tonnes of foreign rice in 2006. Of that total, it plans to buy 211,493 tonnes on a brown rice basis and 34,429 tonnes on a milled rice basis. Brown rice is mainly used for processed food, while milled rice is mostly used as table rice for direct consumption.
