Ukraine's grain exports fell sharply in November 2006 due to export restrictions introduced by the government to avoid a domestic grain shortage and keep bread prices stable, analysts said on Tuesday.
ProAgro agriculture consultancy told Reuters, quoting preliminary official data, that Ukraine cut wheat shipments by 56.6 percent to 169,000 tonnes in November from 389,100 tonnes in October.
Barley exports fell more than 75 percent to 122,800 tonnes in November from 495,500 tonnes a month earlier. In October, Ukraine limited exports of maize and barley to 600,000 tonnes each to the end of 2006. Wheat exports were limited to 400,000 tonnes and rye to 3,000 tonnes. It later suspended licences issued for 194,000 tonnes of wheat and 388,000 of barley.
ProAgro said Ukraine exported 65,700 tonnes of wheat to Bangladesh, 35,000 to Spain, 33,200 to India, 29,900 to Switzerland and 5,200 to other states in November. The country exported 85,200 tonnes of barley to Saudi Arabia, 23,100 to Tunisia and 14,500 to Syria in November.
