Ex-Chairman National Accountability Bureau Lieutenant General (Retd) Syed Muhammad Amjad Saturday said that NAB played important role in providing relief to victims of financial scams in the country and taking corrupt elements to task.
He was speaking at a cheque distribution ceremony among Coop scam victims on the occasion of International Anti-corruption Day today at Chamba House here. Cheques worth Rs 150 million were disbursed among 1081 victims on the occasion.
He said "Co-operatives institutions world over are playing important role in improving financial condition of people but unfortunately in Pakistan these institutions indulged in corrupt practices and deprived people of their hard earned money."
He said President General Pervez Musharraf assigned the task of recovering looted amounts from the unscrupulous elements who through Coop scam had robbed people of rupees 14 billion which ruined many families.
"NAB has efficiently met its responsibilities and succeeded in retrieving major chunk of the looted amount which has been returned to victims." Earlier, Chairman PCBL speaking on the occasion, said the task of returning looted money to the Coop scam victims has been completed to a great extent.
