The NWFP Governor, Lieutenant General Ali Muhammad Jan Aurakzai (Retd) while appreciating the contribution of institutions like Edwards College Peshawar in the promotion of education, has said, there is dire need to make more serious efforts to strengthen their ability and capacity and enable them to contribute more significantly in the spread of education.
Presiding over the annual meeting of the Board of Governors of the college at it's premises on Wednesday, the Governor, who is also chairman of the Board, said the contribution of the college is a well recognised and constant efforts have to be made not only to maintain its standards but also to further enhance its prestige in this competitive environment.
The meeting, besides the secretary to governor, Azmat Haneef and secretary higher education, Tariq Jameel as well as the representative of the provincial finance department, was also attended by the vice chancellor of Peshawar University, Professor Dr Haroon Rasheed, Bishop of Peshawar, representatives of business community and the churches.
Commenting on various agenda points, the Governor said, the college is doing well for the last more than a century and its autonomous status has to be maintained in true perspective without making any compromise on its performance.
However, he stressed that arrangements should be made for developing constant contact of the college with its graduates; majority of whom are serving at very high positions not only across the country but also abroad and there should be a complete data base to ensure their involvement in the affairs of the institution.
The Governor also appreciated the initiatives proposed to further streamline the discipline in the institution and said that there should be proper arrangements for provision of uniforms and souvenirs to the students from the college on payment. Such things, he said, besides promoting image of the institution also contribute a lot to further cement its relationships with the respective students.
He also desired to make arrangements for holding frequent meetings of the board and said that concrete proposals should be put forward to resolve the issues and to take timely decisions for future betterment of the institution.
Meanwhile the meeting approved the budgetary allocations for the ensuing financial year. The meeting also had threadbare discussions on various administrative matters and took decisions accordingly. Later on the Governor also went round the premises of the College.
