Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Sunday said Pakistan is setting up an independent Disaster Management Agency to tackle the situation in case of natural calamities like October 2005 earthquake.
Addressing the concluding session of International Conference on Disaster Management here at Convention Centre, the Prime Minister said Pakistan tackled the October 2005 earthquake with the help of national and international NGOs and world community.
The Prime Minister said that on the recommendation of Pakistan, the United Nation has also set up Disaster Relief Fund with a trust fund of dollars 250 million.
He emphasised the need that this fund should be at least one billion dollars so that the UN should not have to go for appeals to generate funds for providing emergency relief and rehabilitation in case of natural calamities in the world.
Shaukat Aziz said Pakistan has also suggested to the United Nation that there should be a database of the specialised volunteers with the world organisation to seek their services immediately for affected countries. He said despite colossal damage to a huge area, in October 2005, Pakistan was able to overcome this disaster with the help and support of international community.
Appreciating the efforts to organise International Conference on Disaster Management and the UNO, the Prime Minister said they would be helpful in sharing the experiences of the world community, which had already been extending help to Pakistan in facing the earthquake disaster.
