The Supreme Court (SC) did not take up the case of status of Deeni Madaras degrees for short of time and adjourned it for indefinite period.
Most of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal Members of the Parliament and Provincial Assemblies including the Opposition Leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman hold degrees of the religious seminaries, which have been challenged in the Apex Court as not being equivalent to the B A degree which was necessary to contest the 2002 general elections.
Although this case was on the Cause List of the 3-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry for Monday and Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Sher Afghan Niazi remained present in the court, yet it could not be taken up during working hours of the court. MMA has already stated that it would not contest this politically motivated case.
