Kenyan tea prices were mixed at this week's auction, with some top prices firming and most of the tea offered finding buyers, traders said on Wednesday. Mombasa-based Africa Tea Brokers (ATB) said 111,447 packages were offered, with 6,640 packages remaining unsold.
Last week 108,770 packages were offered. "It was a strong market with all the markets active. There was good demand all round and most of the tea on offer was sold," said a trader with a leading export company.
Best BP1s sold at $2.13-$2.80 per kg at this week's auction compared with $2.24-$3.34 per kg at last week's auction. Best PF1s sold at $1.86-$4.03 per kg compared with $1.86-$3.30 per kg last week. Traders said most buyers at the auction bid strongly.
"There were strong enquiries coming from Afghanistan, Egypt, Pakistan Packers and Russia," James Finally said in a market report. Sudan, Yemen and other Middle Eastern countries bought similar quanitities to last week, while the Pakistan Bazaar bought slightly more than at last week's auction, the report added. Kenya is the world's top exporter of black tea.
