US Plains hard red winter wheat basis bids were steady to weaker on Wednesday with supplies seen more than adequate to meet nearby demand, merchants said. An influx of rail and truck wheat into the Wichita area pushed the basis there back 5 cents a bushel and bids were pulled in Newton, Kansas.
There was no basis change along the river in Catoosa, Oklahoma. "We're still pretty iced over. It's real quiet," said a wheat dealer there. Though truck and rail car wheat was slowed recently by a winter storm that blanketed the Plains, movement was more than adequate to meet limited demand, merchants said.
Recent storms have brought moisture to the Plains region, improving prospects for new-crop wheat. More moisture was forecast for the end of the week.
The futures market remained volatile, dropping sharply on Tuesday, but called to rebound on Wednesday on spillover strength from corn futures. Kansas City Board of Trade HRW wheat futures ended 7 to 13-1/4 cents lower on Tuesday, with the March at $4.92, down 13-1/4 cents, and the May down 11-1/2 cents at $4.99-1/2.
In world wheat news, Bangladesh's Food and Disaster Management Ministry on Wednesday issued a tender to import 175,000 tonnes of wheat to meet domestic demands. The tender will close on February 25, ministry officials said.
Also, German farmers have reduced winter wheat plantings by 2.1 percent, while planting more rye and rapeseed for harvesting in summer 2007, the German government's statistics office said on Wednesday.
