The 'Whirling Dervishes' of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Turkey tonight won the hearts of Karachi by performance of the 'Mevlavi Sema.' It was highlighting the poetry and universal message of toleration and accommodation of Islam as embodied in the Masnavi of the great Sufi Poet Maulana Jalaluddin Roomi.
Maulana Roomi is held in very high esteem by the Muslims, whose poetry gave birth of the performance of 'Sema' by the Whirling Dervishes of the Mausoleum of the Mavlans at Konya in Turkey. Presented in the traditional style, with eight Whirling Derviashes and their Chief Heja and organiser, dressed in black with hands folded around the shoulders.
The Dervishes walked in on the open-air theatre style arrangement made for them on the left aids of the old KMC building, which was tastefully decorated for the occasion.
The Consul General of Turkey in Karachi Erdem Mutaf said the visit of the Whirling Dervishes had been arranged to Karachi through the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. He said the Turkish airlines to manifest Turkey's participation in celebrating 'Hamara Karachi' festival like 'our own festival.'
He said the presentation by the Whirling Dervishes reflects the strong bondage between the Turkish and Pakistani people and their common belief in the universal message of love and tolerance as propounded in the poetry of Maulana Jalaluddin Roomi, whom people in Turkey as also in Pakistan held in high regard.
He said that the 800th anniversary celebrations of Maulana Jalaluddin Roomi had begun this year in Turkey and the first performance marking that 800th anniversary was tonight being given in Karachi city, where the Turks feel completely at home, amidst loud cheers from the audience. He specially thanked City Deputy Nasim Nasreen Jalil for her co-operation and assistance in ensuring the successful visit of the Turkish Whirling dervishes.
Begum Nasreen Jalil City Deputy Nasim and Sindh Minister for Women Development Saeeda Malik also lauded the co-operation from Turkey and the scintillating performance of the Turkish Malavi Sema group.
