More than 150 shops and cabins of foreign made carpets and blanket in Karkhano Market the largest Bara market of the country reduced to ashes as a result of fire reportedly erupted here on Friday. The cause of the fire was stated to be short circuit. The losses incurred due to fire were stated to be in billions of rupees.
All shops in Afghan market were totally damaged by the fire erupted from a short circuit reportedly in Numan Karpet and engulfed rest of the shops rapidly, witnesses said. Besides, carpets and blankets, million of cash present in lockups of different shops also burnt. President of the shopkeepers association Mohammad Zubair claimed that the fire caused over Rs two billion loss.
The fire erupted when all shops in Afghan market were closed as they observed holiday on Friday, he informed. Over Rs 5 million cash amount has also burnt which was present inside different shops, he informed adding if the shops were opened the cash amount would have saved and could reduce property loss.
Malak Nibad Shinwari, an owner of the carpet shop told this scribed that his shop was full of foreign made carpet worth Rs 9 million which reduced to ashes. As usual, the trucks of fire brigade reached the spot very late and control the fire after five hours hectic efforts, a police official told this reporter.
The watchman of the market informed the police and fire brigade officials that there was nobody in carpet dealing market as all the shops were closed due to holiday on Friday.
