President General Pervez Musharraf has urged the nation to rise above petty differences, sectarianism and extremism, by adhering to the golden principles of Islam. In a message to the nation on the advent of new Islamic year, the President said.
"We must rise above our personal differences, sectarianism and extremism, by adopting the glowing principles of Islam, based on mutual fraternity and welfare of humanity, leading to progress and prosperity of the country and the Muslim Ummah."
He said that the new Islamic year, 1428 Hijri, "commences with the sacred month of Muharram-ul-Haram, whose reverence and sanctity is an acknowledged fact". He said: "Muharram is one of the four months which have been regarded by the Holy Quran as blessed and sacred ones, where killing and bloodshed are forbidden."
The President said that the historic importance of Muharram-ul-Haram is twofold as, besides its sanctity, the new Islamic Hijri calendar also commences with the same month.
"In line with the sacredness of Muharram-ul-Haram and the initiation of new Hijri year, we should try to live our lives in accordance with the teachings of Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) throughout the year, and in Muharram-ul-Haram in particular," he said.
Musharraf said, "I pray that may Allah Almighty guide the countrymen and the Ummah to spend the new year with the feeling of affinity and fortitude, and respecting the inter-religious principles."
