City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal has called for bringing the traffic police under the direct authority of the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) to cope with the increasing traffic problems in a proper manner across the metropolis.
"Traffic Police should operate its functions under the CDGK as the traffic engineering department is already in its jurisdiction", he added. He was of the view that traffic police was to regulate the traffic on city's thoroughfare and would render positive results under the CDGK.
He expressed these views while talking to a delegation led by Executive Director Aziz Ahmed of National Road Safety Secretariat, Islamabad on Saturday. The delegation apprised him that government established National Road Safety Secretariat under the Ministry of Communication with a view to control the increasing number of road accidents, in addition to highlight the importance of Road Safety Programme. They added that the department was taking initiatives on district levels in the country to make the programme effective and successful.
Kamal observed that the 80 percent traffic related problems could be scaled down if the traffic police was brought under the CDGK, which would equip it with the latest technology, machinery, vehicles and other required facilities.
He said that the newly constructed signal-free corridor would also help smooth flow of traffic with a proposed seven overhead pedestrian bridges as a part of part of the signal-free corridor. The commuters will be safe to cross this corridor through these overhead pedestrian bridges, as public comfort and safety was government's top priority, he maintained.
He stressed that initiatives were badly required to be taken to overhaul the existing traffic police system in the greater interest of the city to meet the present and future traffic related challenges in the city.
