Federal Minister for Population Welfare Chaudhry Shahbaz Hussain on Sunday asked media to adopt pro-active role in creating awareness about implications of over-population, especially at grassroots level, to expedite socio-economic development of the country.
Talking to APP, the minister said that media played crucial role in making opinion of masses about issues so it should rise to the occasion by educating people about creating balance between resources and population.
He added the government was endeavoring to encourage public- private partnership and expressed the hope that the projects in this regard would be a success story.
"Like training imparted to Ulema and the awareness programmes reached to public, the joint ventures will enable us to convey our message more effectively," he added.
He said due to concerted efforts of his ministry, population growth rate which was 2.1 per cent per year, had been brought down to 1.8 per cent, which was also indicated by the National Institute of Population Survey.
"Our target to bring it to 1.3 per cent by the year 2020 will also be achieved," the minister added.
He said effectiveness and success of our programmes could be realised from the fact that now people talk about these programmes and adopt measures to control birth rates. He said that the government under the prudent leadership of President General Pervez Musharraf the country was heading towards heights of development and prosperity and asked the masses to support such leadership in next coming elections as well.
The minister said effectiveness and success of our programmes could be realised from the fact that now people talk about these programmes and adopt measures to control birth rates. "It is no longer a taboo, because population growth cast effects upon country's economy and therefore it should be proportionate to its resources," he added.
