The government would plant 73 million saplings during the Spring Tree Plantation drive, being launched from the first week of February. Official of the Environment Ministry said that year 2007 has been dedicated as "Sarsabz Pakistan Green Pakistan".
They told that the targets set for Spring Tree Plantation Campaign 2007 are, Punjab 20 million, Sindh 10 million, NWFP 20 million, Balochistan 2 million, Northern Areas 4 million and other departments including CDA 2 million.
Every citizen should plant at least two saplings to achieve this national objective of Sarsabz Pakistan, they asked.
All out efforts would be made to enhance tree cover from existing 5 percent to 6 percent under the Millennium Development Goals/targets for which necessary financial assistance would also be provided to the Provincial Forest Department including Azad Jammu Kashmir (AJK) and Northern Areas, they said. They asked the private sector, NGOs, Education Departments to join hands with government in planting trees in addition to achieve the targets. They further said that Monsoon Tree Planting Targets would separately be fixed during that season.
