A suicide bomber detonated an explosives-filled car close to a Nato-led military convoy on the outskirts of the Afghan capital Kabul Sunday but only killed himself, officials said.
The attacker struck nearly 20 kilometres (12 miles) south of the city centre, criminal investigation police chief Ali Shah Paktiawal told AFP. The unidentified suicide bomber was torn into pieces and his vehicle was destroyed, he said. The Taliban has since claimed responsibility for the attack.
"Luckily the suicide attack did not cause any human loss or injuries. Only one vehicle of the friendly forces is damaged," Paktiawal said.
A spokeswoman for the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) confirmed the attack. "There were no casualties in the incident," she said.
The attack was on the main road between Kabul and south-eastern provinces that see regular Taliban-linked violence.
A suicide attack on the same road but further away from the capital wounded three US contractors and two Afghan citizens last week.
There were nearly 140 suicide attacks in Afghanistan last year, a huge increase from the year before. Most were blamed on the Taliban movement that kicked off an insurgency soon after being driven from government in 2001.
ISAF has about 30,000 soldiers from 37 nations helping Afghan forces to put down the insurgents and rebuild the war-battered country. The coalition includes about 11,000 who focus on hunting down militants.
