A special committee of the Senate will meet on Wednesday in the Parliament House to discuss promotions in Grades 19, 20 and 21, and as to how no one from Balochistan, NWFP and Fata could be elevated.
In his ruling, Senate Acting Chairman Jan Mohammad Jamali said that all senators from Balochistan could attend the meeting to give vent to their feelings on why officers from the smaller provinces did not find their way to the higher posts. "We will like to find out if there has been some irregularity or loophole in the process, which left out candidates from the smaller provinces," he said.
Committee chairman SM Zafar told Business Recorder that the forum would review the process of promotions and would like to furnish some recommendations about those who were denied promotions.
He said that Senate Chairman Mohammadmian Soomro had constituted the committee after the issue was forcefully raised not only by the opposition but also by treasury senators late last year.
The meeting, he added, would essentially like to know why no officer from the smaller provinces was given promotion, as the opposition had alleged that the threshold level had been enhanced to keep them at bay.
The committee during its maiden meeting was informed by the officials concerned that all promotions were made as per the Services Act, but it was felt in the opposition ranks that officers were ignored despite having the prerequisites for promotion.
