The members of Youth Parliament should keep the national interests high during their sessions and engage themselves in healthy debates for a better future, said Senate Chairman, Mohammedmian Soomro.
He was addressing the inaugural session of 'Youth Parliament', a brainchild of Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Transparency (PILDAT), here on Thursday.
The Senate chairman, also the patron of Youth Parliament, said it was indeed an unusual practice in the country especially for the young people to get a chance of grooming themselves for future by adopting mock parliamentary practices. "You are the real asset of country and by moving forward you have to practice the acknowledged ways of democratic institutions," he added.
He said the essence of YP members' worth lies in how to engage themselves in healthy debates, regularise their presence, show interest in legislation by overseeing and monitoring the progress on these issues.
Referring to role of politicians and parliamentarians he said they play a very constructive role in guiding and steering the government in decision making process. "We also expect you to work on the same lines and create awareness among the masses about the decent parliamentary norms and practices," he added.
Soomro asked them to have active interaction with voters and properly mould their opinion because they form the essential part of this synergism. He said they should debate over the challenges, which the countrymen might face like conservation of natural resources, population growth, drinking water resources etc. The outcome of such debates would be beneficial for shaping the future of country, he hoped.
He said they should also work tirelessly for improving the standard of living of those people, who live in remote areas of the country. Chairman Steering Committee, Chairman Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights Senator S M Zafar and former speaker National Assembly Wazir Ahmed Jogezai in their speeches said youth were the nation builders which attaches great expectations with them.
Giving details about the YP project, PILDAT Executive Director Ahmed Bilal Mehboob said it was conceived because of two main purposes.
