The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the National Assembly on Saturday advised the Ministry of Defence to formulate within two months a new policy on commercial use of residential land under its control.
The PAC meeting, chaired by Malik Allah Yar Khan, examined the Special Audit Reports related to Defence Services and Ministry of Defence for fiscal 2000-01.
The PAC was informed by Defence Secretary Tariq Wasim Ghazi that the ministry has prepared a draft of a new policy on use of land under its control. He said a presentation will be given to the President soon and after his approval it will be implemented.
About an audit brief on blockade of government money due to non-refund of surplus funds by Land Acquisition Collector (LAC), the PAC was told that a case was being pursued and a major chunk was recovered and rest will be recovered soon.
The Director General, Military Lands and Cantonments, Major General Wajahat said that files were full of correspondence done for recovery of the outstanding amount. The PAC suggested that the chief minister or chief secretary should be approached for recovery.
PAC Chairman Malik Allah Yar Khan advised the Secretary Defence to take more steps for improvement in recovery mechanism. Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan opined that implementation of mechanism for recovery of outstanding amounts was as important as the mechanism itself.
The PAC members, who attended the meeting, included Rai Mansab Ali Khan, Lieutenant Colonel Ghulam Rasool Sahi (Retd), Kanwar Khalid Younis, Asia Azeem, Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Hyderi, Riaz Fatiana, Qurban Ali Shah, Safdar Shakir, Qamar Zaman Kaira, Ashiq Hussain Gopang, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, and Ali Akbar Wains. Besides the Auditor General, senior officers from AG office and ministries of defence and finance also attended the meeting.
