The liberal import of reconditioned cars has put the local industry in trouble and forcing the supporting industry to fall during the last one and half years. Former FPCCI president and Businessmen Panel co-chairman, Iftikhar Ali Malik is critical to the policy of liberal import of cars at the cost of the local assemblers.
Malik said as a Pakistani he opposed import of reconditioned cars in 2005, and cautioned the government of its adverse effect on the local auto and other related industries. He said the government should understand the gravity of the situation arising of the massive and uninterrupted import of reconditioned cars and take immediate measures for restraining further incoming of the cars.
Iftikhar Ali Malik said that auto industry provides jobs to hundreds of thousands of families and helps the government revenue by paying taxes of billions of rupee per annum.
The Businessmen Panel co-chairman wants standardisation of the local auto makes to ensure that the market flourishes. He said import of over 50,000 cars last years was a real trouble for the local industry that was fast growing and at the same time achieving deletion targets set by the government.
He said the local trucks, cars and tractors manufacturers instead pushing forward their investment plans for expansion to meet the demand of the buyers were now fighting for their survival in import-driven auto regime.
