Foreign banks, through comparative competitiveness studies in the region of exporting countries like China, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Vietnam and Cambodia, should consider rendering an even playing field for trade development, as the developing economies are mostly export reliant for their development.
The Chief Executive of Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) Tariq Ikram said when he met Muhammad Tahir Sadiq, CEO of Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) Pakistan. The meeting discussed initiatives that would contribute to fostering of a better environment for Pakistan's trade development.
Both the men agreed that export of Pakistani products to overseas market should be encouraged, as customised financial instruments for export financing and risk management were the need of the hour. Importers of Pakistani products could also benefit from the envisaged instruments of trade, which could help strengthen trade links internationally.
It was discussed and mutual consensus was achieved that encouraging and strengthening of women entrepreneurs was a strong vehicle for the empowerment of women in Pakistan. Initiatives for introducing special financial products to promote women exporters should be encouraged by all the banks. Greater success of women exporters would help provide role models to help, provide incentive and socially re-engineer the role of women in the main stream of Pakistani society.
The banking sector in the current scenario of excess liquidity should look at R&D for development of a range of dedicated financial instruments for facilitation of exports and trade development both through larger, as well as small and medium size exporters.
The Pakistan Bankers Association may actively participate so that such initiatives were supported as a broad-based effort to enhance the export contribution to the national GDP, they discussed. The meeting concluded with both heads mutually agreeing to exploit and look at possibilities for developing trade in Pakistan.
