Approximately 50 percent of all major fire incidents reported within Karachi occur in Site Industrial area. This was said in a report of Site Association of Industry (SAI). The report noted that this happen because most of the local industries do not pay enough attention to fire-prevention measures themselves, to cut down the chances of spreading of fire.
Fire incidents tend to spread and intensify when communication is either lacking or has broken down. Firstly, many industries do not have fire alarms to detect the initial signs of fire. Secondly, once the fire spreads and action is taken belatedly, fire extinguishers are often employed even tough these are only designed to control small fire and not big-scale industrial fire. Thirdly, many industries are not aware of how to contact Karachi Fire Rescue Service (KFRS) in an emergency.
All industries must have fire alarm systems installed with automated diallers that will call KFRS as soon as a fire is detected. This will save valuable time in communicating with KFRS. The fire alarm systems should also include a hotline communication system directly with Site fire station like 15.
The report noted that to make water available at the time of fire is the responsibility of premises owner where fire has erupted. This is the practice all over the world but unfortunately, this system does not exist in Pakistan.
The report suggests that it is absolutely necessary that water be made available at the time of fire that spreads in no time and engulfs a major portion of the industry. A network of saline water (sea water) should be laid in Site area and hydrant points equipped with valves so that these points can be used in emergency.
The report said that SAI and Site Fire Station Authority work on this and submit the proposal in the Board meeting of Site Limited for consideration. The project could be financed with the help of the City District Government Karachi (CDGK).
The association also suggested establishment of one more fire station for Site area.
The report noted that no single large fire incident has been reported in any multinational industry in Site, because they are highly conscious and take maximum fire protection measures at their own level.
It was suggested that an industrial fire protection institute should be established at Site fire station to train staff of various industries in Site in fire-fighting and rescue services.
