Combined opposition has got signed a requisition for Senate session to be filed next week to debate 'massive irregularities' in Pakistan International Airlines. The requisition will be filed with the Senate Secretariat after 10 Muharram.
Besides, PIA matters, the opposition could also include 'the poor law and order situation' and police manhandling of journalists close to a local hotel on Friday afternoon. Alliance for Restoration of Democracy parliamentary secretary Izhar Amrohvi told Business Recorder that though 25 senators' signatures were required to ensure the requisition application was in order and 30 lawmakers signed it.
Under the rules, the Chairman Senate is bound to summon the session within 14 days after a requisition application is filed and it essentially takes up the agenda mentioned therein. Opposition senators had walked out of the Senate on Thursday, protesting the PIA's distribution of a brief among journalists prior to a debate in the House. They believed the action was aimed at undermining the Senate.
Amrohvi maintained that joint opposition had also signed an adjournment motion on police action against mediapersons, which would be submitted to the National Assembly after Ashura. President General Pervez Musharraf on Friday summoned the assembly to meet on February 6 in the afternoon for its first session of the fifth year.
