District Assembly of Rawalpindi on Saturday witnessed an uproar when Convener of the Assembly Muhammad Afzal Khokhar announced suspension of a minority member Jibran Gill for his unique mode of protest.
The District Assembly was in session with Afzal Khokhar, Naib Nazim in the chair here on Saturday, when Jibran Gill entered the hall riding a donkey to protest against the cases filed against him.
Various members of the ruling PML (Q) forced Gill to enter the hall where police officials on duty thrashed him allegedly on the instructions of the Convener. The Convener announced suspension of Gill's membership.
The opposition members from PML-N and PPPP came to rescue Gill strongly condemning his thrashing. They rejected the claim of Afzal Khokhar about suspension of membership of Gill saying that he has no powers to do so.
The opposition members of the District Assembly including Imran Hayat, Anjum Farooq, Tahir Mughal (Nazims) and Nusrat Siraj and many other women members addressing a press conference after the session said they would leave no stone unturned in protecting the rights of the minorities.
"It is a stigma on the face of government, which is claiming to be a champion of minorities rights as a member of minority community was being harassed and involved in fake cases," said Imran Hayat. The Opposition members asked the Convener to resolve the issue amicably otherwise they would launch protest on every forum.
