Sports Goods Manufactures and Exporters Association Chairman, Professor Safdar Sandal has appealed to President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz to take immediate remedial for the survival of sports goods industry from total collapse.
Addressing a press conference here on Friday he said that at present the Sports industry was confronting with various problems and it seems the industry was taking its last breath. He urged upon the government to abolish all taxes and Sialkot should be declared tax-free city for the larger interest of small and medium industry.
He said the production cost had been increased to many folds due to increase in electricity, Sui gas and telephone rates as a result of which the business community was suffering adversely. Professor Safdar demanded of the government to provide research and development facilities to the sports goods industry enabling it to meet the global market challenges easily.
The Sports goods industry especially soccer ball manufacturers and exporters were confronting with serious problems due to the introduction of Thermo-Molded ball, he said. About Nike-SAGA episode, the Association chairman said the decision of Nike for discontinuation of work with SAGA was shocking because 20,000 workers had been affected with this decision.
Undoubtedly the country had lost an important buyer as well as credibility in the international market. He was of the opinion that efforts should be made for resolving Nike-SAGA issue in a respectable way.
