Here is how major stock markets outside the United States ended on Friday.
EUROPE STOCKS EXCHANGE: European shares rose to their highest close in six years, boosted by a healthy retail rally after private equity set Sainsbury in its sights, while a fall in technology and miners capped gains.
Among major movers, Germany's E.ON jumped after its rival Gas Natural pulled out of the race for Spanish power firm Endesa, with Renault down after a hefty drop in its part-owned Nissan affiliate.
The pan-European FTSEurofirst index of 300 leading shares closed up 0.5 percent at 1,537.65, its highest close since February 2001.
FRANKFURT STOCKS EXCHANGE: The DAX index ended at 6885.76 points, up 34.48 or 0.5 percent, and better off by 195.42 points on the week.
PARIS STOCKS EXCHANGE: The CAC-40 index closed at 5677.30 points, up 15.05 or 0.27 percent, rising 95 points since last Friday.
ZURICH STOCKS EXCHANGE: The Swiss market index closed at 9260.49 points, up 42.62 or 0.46 percent, gaining 219.39 points over the week.

SYDNEY STOCKS EXCHANGE: Shares rose 0.3 percent to end at a record closing peak as miner BHP Billiton rose ahead of its earnings report next week, while QBE Insurance Group firmed on an overseas buy.
The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index added 17.4 points to 5,831.5, finishing at a record closing peak for a second straight day. The index, which rose 61.6 points on the week, also scaled an all-time high of 5,841.3 earlier in the day.
JOHANNESBURG STOCKS EXCHANGE: South African shares closed weaker with Harmony Gold's shares leading the blue chips lower on the back of a worse-than-expected 33 percent drop in headline earnings per share.
The All-Share index shed 0.4 percent to close at 25,679.19 but gained 301.90 points over the week. The All Gold index closed at 2761.62 points, down 49.54 or 1.76 percent, and shedding 26.61 points in the week.
