Neptune Orient Lines, which runs the world's eighth-biggest container shipping line, carried 12 percent more cargo on its ships in the six weeks to December 29, while revenue per container fell 10 percent.
Neptune Orient Lines, controlled by Singapore's government through its investment arm Temasek, said in a statement on Monday that its container shipping arm APL transported 244,800 40-foot equivalent units (FEUs), a standard industry measure, between November 18 and December 29. Average revenue per container fell 10 percent to $2,543 in the same period, compared with a year ago.
NOL said it carried 8 percent more cargo during the whole of 2006, compared with 2005, while the revenue per container in the year fell 7 percent. Full-year 2006 revenues totalled US $1.3 billion, a 2 percent increase over the previous year.
