Ukraine's wheat exports through Black Sea ports fell to 29,900 tonnes in January 2007 from 208,960 tonnes in December 2006 due to export restrictions, analysts said on Tuesday. ProAgro agriculture consultancy quoted data from ports as showing Ukraine exported 27,000 tonnes of wheat to Bangladesh and 2,900 tonnes to Turkey last month.
In December, Ukraine exported 54,640 tonnes of wheat to Turkey, 62,100 to Bangladesh, 43,120 to India, 41,070 to Spain, 5,020 to Italy and 3,000 to Libya. Ukraine's government introduced grain export quotas in the last quarter of 2006 covering a total volume of 2.7 million tonnes for the period between October 2006 and June 2007.
The government has said the measures will prevent a jump in local bread prices after a 10 percent fall in grain output in 2006. Earlier on Tuesday, the agriculture ministry said the government would allow about 837,000 tonnes of grain already accumulated for shipping in ports to be exported.
