Pakistan's Ambassador Mohammad Asghar Afridi has expressed his determination to implement reforms and positive changes at the Pakistan Education Centre (PEC), the major educational institution for the Pakistani community in Qatar.
Afridi hoped that the appointment of a new principal, who is an acclaimed academician, and a new batch of teachers would enhance the educational standard of the school, a private TV news channel reported.
"The last batch of 36 new teachers joined the PEC last week. Based on the recommendations of an assessment committee, more staff will be recruited locally or from Pakistan," said Chairman of PEC board of governors. He said the school provided education to all segments of the Pakistani community.
Answering a question, Afridi hinted at a hike in staff salaries very soon.
After extensive discussions and recommendations of the financial and transport committees, decisions have been taken regarding increase in staff salaries, construction of a new hostel, induction of four new buses and reviving general facilities like drinking water and maintenance works.
He said the commercialisation of PEC could not be allowed but at the same time "We have to save public money by avoiding unproductive expenditure and unnecessary fee concessions".
He said an agreement had been signed with a local Pakistani company for the construction of a hostel. The project costing QR 2.7 million will be completed in 16 months.
"Work on the project has already started but the official launch ceremony will be held on the occasion of Pakistan Day on March 23. Afridi thanked the PEC board members for their dedicated services to the community.
