Pakistan Cleft Lip and Palate Association (PCLAPA) has started surgical operations of people from all over the country in order to provide free medical facilities and undertake surgery of patients suffering from the major disability of cleft lip and palate.
Forty-five patients have been successfully operated upon over the last two days alone. The surgeries will be performed for ten days at the privately-run, most modern Bashir Hospital Gujrat. The team of internationally known eminent specialist consultant plastic and other surgeons includes British and British - based Pakistani doctors.
The surgery cures and helps patients with a cut lip or palate, or both-a disability that badly disfigures a person and his or her face, but the patient also feels difficulty in speaking, spending a normal life or taking food and drinking, besides suffering psychologically.
This is the eighteenth surgery camp. At seventeen surgery camps, organised in the past, more than 6,250 patients were examined and treated. More than 1,150 patients underwent surgery, with a 100 percent success rate, Dr Ijaz Bashir, Secretary General of PCLAPA said here on Monday.
PCLAPA, with its headquarters at the surgery of Bashir Hospital, Railway Road Gujrat, was established in 1995. The team of internationally reputed British Consultant Specialist Plastic Surgeons and top Pakistani doctors, who visit Pakistan twice a year, perform the surgeries, free of charge, as part of their humanitarian work.
