Punjab Minister for Agriculture, Arshad Khan Lodhi has said that the wheat cultivation is a profitable profession and the farmers would be paid the wheat support price at the rate of Rs 425 per maund.
He expressed these views while talking to farmers during his visit to wheat growing areas of Okara, Sahiwal, Chichawatni, a spokesman of the department said here on Monday.
The minister said that the government would make it sure to procure each and every grain of wheat from the farmers. Wheat procurement is the responsibility of the government, he added. He hoped that the recent rains would result in an increased production of wheat crop of one million ton. He assured that the farmers would not be kept hostage to the middlemen's nexus. The minister expressed his satisfaction over the fact that the recent rains have left a good impact on the wheat crop. He expected that the Barani areas would also yield bumper wheat crop this year. He told the farmers that the government had fixed the wheat procurement target at 17.8 million tonnes.
