The City District Government Multan will provide 12,000 gallons clean water to citizens through purification plants being installed at 12 different locations in the city, from March 15. This all is being done on purely by utilising affordable, reliable and cost effective modern technologies to ensure provision of safe drinking water to the people.
City district nazim Mian Faisal Mukhtar announced this at a press conference here on Monday, saying CDGM had been spending entire funds from own resources instead of getting grant from elsewhere.
Contaminated drinking water carrying bacteria and virus both in public water supply and private sources had been promoting chronic water borne diseases in the city due to leakage in damaged pipes, officials said. Each citizen is required 70 gallons water daily but the residents are being served just 5 to 10 gallons contaminated water daily.
Over 80 percent population (11.5 million) out of total 14 million has been depending upon shallow water sources while the civic agency Wasa could serve drinking water from 600-700 feet depth resources to only 2,50,000 population.
The registered sewer/drain connections in the city are 1,40,000 as compared to 33000 water supply connections that overburdened the flow of sewerage water into drinking water supply lines.
The only survey done in 2001 reported at least 295 deaths besides discovering 46166 cases of chronic diseases with Multan Nishtar hospital, 5921 cases with civil hospital, and 7689 cases with municipal dispensaries due to drinking contaminated water.
The population volume is developing with growth rate of 2.97 percent yearly and the present drinking water infrastructures would generate water scarcity of 95.59 million gallon in 2010, 118.99 million gallon in 2015 and 145.92 million gallon a day in 2020, revealed officials statistics.
Mian Faisal Mukhtar pointed out 12 locations where the purification plants would be installed, which include Chowk Shah Abbas, Al-Jilan, Mumtazabad, Shah Rukin-i-Allam D-Block, News Multan colony, Samijabad, Lohari gate, Bagh Langey Khan, Aam Khas Bagh, Jamilabad, Ansaar colony, Wilayatabad and Nawan Sher water works.
Rupees 8.4 million are being spent on the installation of 12 water purification plants in which ultra-violet raze technology is being used to prevent water from germs and to stop gastro and other diseases.
The people have been assured frequent water supply from March 30 because choked and rusted water supply lines have been changed or replaced. The city district nazim appealed to the general public for paying their utility bills to water and sanitation agency to run the entire system smoothly.
He said the Wasa had signed a MoU with each union council that would be responsible for recovery of sanitation bills. At present fresh drinking water sources up to 250-feet to 300-feet in Multan urban areas have been found contaminated due to rusting and leaking pipes, which were laid down 30 years back.
