Yet another segment in which Pakistan State Oil enjoys market leadership is petrochemicals. The company is engaged in trading of various chemical products for the past more than three decades. These petrochemicals are organic chemicals manufactured from petroleum as raw material. Other sources like wood and coal are also used.
PSO is committed to serve the petrochemical needs of the local industry and is positioned among customers as a reliable, cost-effective and high-quality chemical supplier. The company markets imported and indigenous chemicals in bulk through tank lorries as well as in drums.
THE MOST COMMON CHEMICALS DEALT BY PSO ARE:
-- Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA)
-- Mineral Turpentine (MTT)
-- Solvent Oil
-- Xylene
-- C-9 (Naphtha)
-- Acetic Acid
-- Vinyl Acetate Monomer (VAM)
-- Ethyl Acetate
-- Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK)
-- Hexane
-- Polyethylene
-- Toluene
-- Butyl Acetate
The core functions of PSO's Chemical Department involve buying and selling of chemicals. Both of these functions are carried out in a very transparent way. Buying is made through tender invitation system. The most important factors considered for procurement is 'quality'. Rates in international market are also observed very closely.
The instrumental factors to achieve the objective of supplying the best quality petrochemicals to the nation include the huge infrastructure, millions of tons storage capacity, state-of-the-art terminals and depots (where all quality and HSE standards are strictly adhered to) and ISO-certified laboratories.
PSO's competitive advantage has not only resulted in market leadership but also availability of the best quality petrochemicals economically to the national industries, thereby, enabling them to compete with multinationals and the international marketers.
LUBRICANTS MANUFACTURING TERMINAL, KORANGI:
Ever since its existence, Pakistan State Oil Co Ltd has been playing a leading role in the oil industry of the country. Round-the-clock and uninterrupted oil supplies, all the way from Karachi to Khyber, through an integrated network of oil terminals and storage depots, has been PSO's hallmark.
Besides selling Mogas, Furnace Oil, Diesel, Kerosene, Jet Fuels, etc, PSO has set up a state-of-the-art Lubricants Manufacturing Terminal (LMT) at Korangi Industrial Area in Karachi.
The main objective to set up the latest facility is to cater to all kinds of lubricants customers, including automotive, hi-street and industrial consumers by meeting the national demand through products of international standards.
THE FUNCTION OF THIS TERMINAL CAN BE DIVIDED INTO THE FOLLOWING:
1. Manufacturing
2. Sales and Distribution
3. Technology Upgrading
MANUFACTURING:
Raw materials (Lube Base Oils and Additives) are acquired from suppliers of national and international repute and stored as per the prevailing global standards.
The most advanced computerised equipment like the Automatic Batch Blender (ABB), Simultaneous Metered Blending (SMB) and Additive Dozing Unit (ADU) have been installed at the LMT in order to produce top-quality lubricants in desired volume as per the demand.
The packages in which the lubricants are offered to customers are also selected after thorough evaluation of suppliers as it is very important to PSO to supply lubricants to its valued customers in the best possible way. Therefore, lubricants are packed and sealed at the LMT in such a manner that customers receive them without any impurity and weather effect.
SALES AND DISTRIBUTION:
Timely dispatch of lubricants to our valued customers is another important issue that really matters at PSO. To cater to the local sales throughout the city, Free Lube Delivery Vans have been introduced. These vans carry consignments to all Retail, Hi-Street and Industrial Consumers, even up to Dhabeji, Thatta and Hub Chowki.
Whereas to dispatch the required consignments to customers located in various other parts of the country, lubricants are transferred from the LMT to the upcountry depots through a fleet of 20 ft and 40 ft Dedicated Containers from where onwards the customers are fed according to their orders.
This efficient delivery system has received appreciation from customers.
TECHNOLOGY UPGRADING:
PSO has always focused on providing the best product to its customers. Therefore, a continuous exchange of the latest information, followed by upgrading of technology, whenever and wherever deemed necessary, is opted by PSO so that the company can offer products at the most-competitive prices. That is why Castrol of England have chosen PSO as their sole agent to manufacture and sell their entire range of lubricants in Pakistan. This agreement has been in force since long, which is another feather in PSO's cap.
To achieve landmarks in production, well-equipped and advanced lubricants testing laboratory has also been established at the LMT wherein all blended lubricants are passed through rigorous tests according to international standards before filling into packages. This has boosted customers' confidence in lubricants being offered by PSO.
LMT also proudly enjoys producing Viscosity Improver (VI) with the help of the latest equipment and machines, thus, saving millions of dollars as foreign exchange, which used to be spent earlier on imports of the same.
SALIENT FEATURES:
One of the salient features of the LMT is that all functions are performed under Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) rules and regulations, whereas the location is an ISO 9001 certified facility. Since July 2005, along with the entire organisation, the latest ERP has also been effective at the LMT. SAP has helped a lot to produce harmony and ease in all integrated functionalities of the LMT besides serving our customers in far better ways.
FUTURE PLANS:
Before long, the LMT will be reinforced with an automatic Can Manufacturing Unit (CMU), which would discourage producers of fake lubricants from distributing pirated cans into the market. Besides, an automatic Can Filling Unit (CFU) will also be set up, equipped with very high-speed filling machines that offer multiple packages of 1,3,4 and 10 ltrs cans with Index Sealing, Shrink Wrapping and Laser Coding so that pilfer-proof products are received by customers.
