Pakistan Association of Urological Surgeons is holding a three-day conference to bridge the gap between needs of the patients and the available facilities in the area of urology.
Speaking at a news conference on Friday, NWFP president of Pakistan Association of Urological Surgeons, Professor Dr Isa Khan said that the sole urology unit of the province was in dilapidated condition. Its building had long been declared dangerous.
The conference entitled "Bridging the Gap," would take stock of the facilities in the province and would make recommendation to the government to improve the urological services in the province. He said that the province of Punjab had started urology units at the district level, whereas Sindh had state-of-the-art services for the patients suffering from disease related to kidneys, ureter and bladder.
Even the Balochistan province had got two wards, he said. According to him, they lacked equipment due to which patients were being sent to other provinces. He said that urological diseases were often confused with nephrological ailments, saying that urologists performed surgeries while the nephrologists cured the patients through drugs.
Flanked by urologists Dr Khalilul Haq and Dr Sarhad Khan, he said that 80 percent of stone formation in the body was due to calcium and minerals used by the people. "The NWFP is ahead of all the cities in the countries as far as prevalence of the urological ailments is concerned," he said, citing a geographical study.
