Lawyers fraternity of the city observed strike and black day on Monday to register anger against the suspension of Supreme Court Chief Justice, Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry. The strike would continue on Tuesday and lawyers would not attend courts.
On the call of different bar councils the lawyers observed complete strike and boycotted proceeding from the lower courts to the superior judiciary. They staged a sit-in in front of the district courts at the MA Jinnah Road, popularly known as Bunder Road, for more than one hour. The protestors wore black armbands, waved black flags and chanted slogan against the government.
They charged the government of suppressing and subjugating judiciary for personal reasons. As long as the protest continued MA Jinnah road remained closed for vehicular traffic from Civil Hospital to the site of the protest. Strong law enforcement contingent was posted to control law and order situation and stop lawyers from taking out a procession. The scene outside the Sindh High Court was not different. Lawyers stayed in bar rooms and boycotted proceedings of the court.
The strike compelled judges of lower courts and the high court to remain in their chambers. Representatives of the lawyers body also explained to judges that the protest was to uphold the dignity of judiciary and had nothing to do with ongoing political disagreements between the government and opposition political parties.
Talking to Business Recorder, Chairman of the Human Rights Committee of the Sindh Bar Council, Aqil Lodhi said that the Joint Action Committee and the Sindh Bar Council would meet on Tuesday at 10:30 am to decide future course of action.
