Closing stock market indices
Major stock markets outside the United States ended on Tuesday.
EUROPE STOCKS EXCHANGE: European shares dropped and ended at the day's low as banks were rattled by concerns about their exposure to a troubled US housing market and worries that growth in the US economy will stall. The pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index closed down 1.09 percent at 1,465.92, marking the day's low after a morning retreat by US shares gathered pace.
FRANKFURT STOCKS EXCHANGE: The DAX index ended at 6623.99 points, down 91.5 or 1.36 percent.
PARIS STOCKS EXCHANGE: The CAC-40 index closed at 5432.94 points, down 63.13 or 1.15 percent.
ZURICH STOCKS EXCHANGE: The Swiss market index closed at 8829.09 points, down 70.31 or 0.79 percent.
MILAN STOCKS EXCHANGE: The All Share Mibtel index closed at 31397 points, down 255 or 0.81 percent.
SYDNEY STOCKS EXCHANGE: Australian shares shed earlier gains to end down 0.4 percent as losses in other Asian markets prompted investors to book profits, with the top banks leading the decline. The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index ended down 26.0 points at 5,865.0.
JOHANNESBURG STOCKS EXCHANGE: South African stocks skidded on the back of weaker global equities and as SABMiller fell on news it lost its licence to manufacture Amstel here. The All-share index closed at 25853.05 points, down 159.07 or 0.61 percent. The All Gold index closed at 2780.87 points, up 17.3 or 0.63 percent, while the Industrial index closed at 18251.41 points, down 239.56 or 1.30 percent.
