PML lawyers' convention: Elahi slams opposition's stance on Chief Justice issue
Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi addressing a lawyers convention held under the auspices of PML-Q here at Alhamara Hall Wednesday castigated the opposition political parties for giving wrong political interpretation to the Presidential reference and said that by doing so were scoring points.
Criticising PPPP founder chairman late Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto for becoming Martial Law Administrator, the CM stated that he had committed infamous acts like that of establishing 'Dalai Lama Camp' in Azad Kashmir when in power.
Referring to Benazir Bhutto for duplicate standards, the CM mentioned her statement in which she spoke of making Jehangir Badr PPPP leader as Chief Justice of Pakistan. Pervaiz Elahi said if decisions of court favoured Benazir, they were considered as just or otherwise the courts were kangaroo court for her, he said.
The CM referring to Benazir that at present she was involved in litigation in a Swiss court. He challenged her to call that a Kangaroo court.
The Chief Minister speaking about Nawaz Sharif stated that during his tenure of prime minister, the Supreme Court of Pakistan was attacked and when he went into the court on the matter, made few innocent workers as escape goats.
He said it was amazing to see statements of these leading opposition leaders in a media with reference to the court issues now.
He said that the leaders need to ponder over how they dealt with judiciary when they were in power.
He said that Justice Sajjad Ali Shah was present now, and should be asked who gave respect to the courts and who took contrary steps, he suggested.
The Punjab CM referring to Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto late tenure in power said he did not bear government of Maulana Mufti Mahmood then, while during period of President Pervez Musharraf besides opposition by Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal of his, their government was in existence for last four years, he dilated.
The Chief Minister stated that during the tenure of the present government funds worth millions were given to representative bodies of lawyers. He said it was time that a line was drawn between lawyers who supported or were against them.
He asked the participant lawyers to carry the message of the convention to the districts that they belong. The CM announced a number of steps for lawyer fraternity on the occasion. Muhammad Basharat Raja Punjab Law Minister, Alamgir President Muslim League Lawyer's Wing also spoke on the occasion.
