Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on Wednesday said the politicians sitting abroad had been trying to gain political milage out of the present situation in the country, by politicising a purely constitutional matter.
"These elements resorted to creating law and order situation, setting aside their national responsibility and the respect for the judiciary," he said while addressing a press conference here at the Press Information Centre.
The minister referring to the geo-political situation in the region, said the country was passing through a crucial stage and demands from the politician to desist from damaging peace and stability. "By creating law and order situation, they were indirectly causing damages to themselves," he remarked.
President General Pervez Musharraf, the minister said, took a constitutional step by forwarding the reference against Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry to the Supreme Judicial Council.
Replying to a question, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said it was a hard fact that the Chief Justice had put hurdles on the way to appoint judges in Balochistan and Lahore High Courts and the vacancies in both the high courts remained vacant for long.
"We have all the respect for the courts and let the legal procedure take its own course," he said. He hoped that Justice Rana Bhagwandas on his return would act according to the Constitution.
He termed the electronic media of the country as an asset, so it should work with complete wisdom and insight while reporting all the happenings, especially of those, which are sensitive in nature. "Their importance is increasing with the passage of time," he added.
Regarding those killed in Samjhota Express fire incident, during the last month, he said India had provided passport numbers of some 38 people to the Foreign office, which would now be scrutinised by the Ministry of Interior for authenticity.
He questioned the list by saying that the number of passports given by Indian side was not matching the number of those Pakistanis who were missing in the train fire incident. He said neither names nor any other relevant information was provided about these passengers except their passport numbers.
He expressed the hope that India would continue to update the government of Pakistan about development regarding inquiry of the incident and ultimately bringing those to book, who found guilty by awarding them exemplary punishment at the earliest.
He told a questioner that Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz had undertaken his visit to Uzbekistan as per schedule and his return home would also be according to the already set programme and there was nothing special to it.
He said the groundbreaking of Leh Expressway would be performed on March 27. A big public meeting would also be arranged to mark the event in a befitting manner at Liaquat Bagh Rawalpindi, the same day, he added.
