Replacement of 700 kilometres long rusty and worn out water-supply lines in various localities of the city would commence during the first week of next month and the project would be completed within six months at a cost of Rs 920 million.
Lahore District Government Nazim Mian Amer Mahmood said this while chairing a meeting here on Thursday, disclosed an official. Water and Sanitation Authority (WASA) Managing Director Pervaiz Iftikhar, D M D (Operations) Syed Haroon Shah and other officials concerned attended the meeting.
The total length of water supply lines in Lahore was 3200 kilometres, told in the meeting. The replacement of water supply lines was being carried out on priority bases in areas where depth of ground water is deep. These damaged pipes were causing contamination in water by sewerage pipes.
The meeting was further informed that the areas of Data Nagar, Shad Bagh, Misri Shah, Shahdara, Anarkali, Mozang, Shimla Pahari and other densely populated areas had been focused.
Mian Amer Mahmood underlined the need for taking into consideration WASA's master plan for water supply and sewerage in the city while formulating water supply schemes and wastewater disposal plans for areas outside WASA jurisdiction. "Guidelines laid down by WASA must be strictly observed besides taking into account the specifications of other infrastructure while executing such projects with a view to synchronising it with the existing system," he added.
