The Pilot project to provide water supply and sanitation facilities through community participation in Union Council 60 Guldasht Colony was launched here on Saturday. The project would be executed within six months.
An MoU was signed between the City District Government and Urban Unit, Planning and Development Department, Government of the Punjab for executing this scheme in this locality which had so far been outside WASA jurisdiction.
Talking to newsmen, District Nazim Mian Amer Mahmood told them that this was the first ever water supply and sanitation project of its kind being carried out with the monetary contribution of local population. "The residents agreed to finance the cost of laying pipes network along small roads and street," he added.
According to him, the Urban Unit would fund the infrastructure of water supply and sewerage in the area besides installing tube-wells and construction of disposal stations under this project. Anjuman Samaji Behbood,an NGO, would carry out social mobilisation and capacity building of people in UC-60 and advise them for designing, operation and maintenance of household components of the scheme.
Mian Amer Mahmood observed that self-help was the shortest way for development and the project would bring dividends for the people of the area. He expressed the optimism that this model would later be replicated in other areas as well. WASA Managing Director Pervaiz Iftikhar, Project Director Urban Unit Dr Nasir Javed, nazim of UC 60 Haji Muhamamd Ashraf and other officials attended the ceremony.
