PSL II: Zalmi beat Qalandars by 17 runs

DUBAI: Peshawar Zalmi defended 166-6 to beat Lahore Qalandars by 17 runs in the 16th encounter of the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2017 at the Dubai International Stadium on Friday.

Sohail Tanvir top scored for Qalandars with 36 not out hitting two sixes and as many fours after Delport provided them a great start scoring brisk 32 runs in just 15 deliveries.

A middle-order collapse almost sealed the victory for Zalmi however Tanvir and Yasir Shah tried their best in end overs to rescue Qalandars but it was too little too late by then. Shah was stumped at 22 in the final over by Zalmi skipper Shahid Afridi.

Aamer Yamin 25 and Narine 21 were the other main contributors for the Lahore side.

Mohammad Hafeez and Shaib Al Hasan grabbed two wickets each while Hasan Ali, Wahab Riaz, Afridi and Sammy shared a wicket each for the winning side.

Shakib was given the 'man of the match award' for his brilliant all-round performance.

Earlier batting first of winning the toss, Zalmi were off to a slow start, losing their first wicket cheaply after opener Tamim Iqbal was caught and bowled at 5 by Aamer Yamin, who grabbed a stunner in the first ball of the second over.

Kamran Akmal and Muhammad Hafeez then shared a solid partnership of 53 runs with Akmal being the more aggressive of the duo, was steadily adding runs to the board. The partnership was broken by Qalandars leggie Yasir Shah after he bowled Hafeez on 13.

Akmal soon perished on 58, after he was stumped by Muhammad Rizwan on Yasirs delivery. The leggie was impressive with the ball, as he was able to extract sharp turn from the Dubai track grabbing 2 wickets for 19 in his four overs.

Shakib al Hasan and Marlon Samuels then stabilized the ship, sharing a 38 run stand, before Samuels was dismissed by fellow West Indian Sunil Narine on 17.

Shakib continued to add runs to the board, while losing partners on the other end. Shahid Afridi was run out on 10 by Ghulam Mudassar.

Sohail Tanvir claimed Shakibs scalp, after he was caught by Umar Akmal on 30 in the final over of the first inning. Some late hitting by Zalmi skipper Sammy led them to a respectable target of 166.
