The Supreme Court on Monday issued notices for contempt of court, for Wednesday, to Chief Commissioner Khalid Pervez , Inspector General Police Iftikhar Ahmad, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ali, SSP Zafar Iqbal, DSP Jamil Hashmi and two other police officials of Islamabad for manhandling Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry on March 13, 2007.
When he was going to appear before the Supreme Judicial Council hearing Presidential Reference against him. A three-member full bench of the Court, headed by Acting Chief Justice Rana Bhagwandas, passed these orders on the report of the Inquiry Tribunal, who found these officials guilty of manhandling Chief Justice.
Top brass of Islamabad Administration was present in the Supreme Court during the hearing of the case. Taking suo motu notice on media and newspaper reports, the Court had appointed Justice Ejaz Afzal of Peshawar High Court to find out the hands behind the mishandling of the CJ near his residence on 13/3/2007 and submit its report in 7 days, which was presented on Saturday March 31.
However, top officials while recording their statements before the Tribunal last week had stated on oath that "no such incident happened before their sight and presence though they were present at the site." When asked by the Court, Deputy Attorney General Raja Irshad, representing the Federation, said that he stood by the report of the Inquiry Tribunal, and added that the accused should be proceeded against on criminal charges of contempt of the court. The Court, comprising ACJ Rana Bhagwandas, Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jilani and Justice Nasirul Mulk, issued contempt notices.
