The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) held its party elections in 290 provincial assembly constituencies of Punjab on Friday. The elections were conducted peacefully and a 70 percent turnout was recorded Khawaja Rizwan Alam, Secretary Public relations Punjab told newsmen here on Monday.
He said that PPP chief election commissioner Senator Sajjad Bukhari was satisfied with the elections' results. He said all party workers had been given the opportunity to work for the PPP's benefit through these elections. Khawaja said the overall turnout in the Punjab was 70 percent.
In some constituencies, he added, it was 100 percent. "Participation in the elections showed that the workers are waiting for an initiative to develop the party's future." He said the ongoing elections were transparent and fair.
He said that the election commission would announce elections in the remaining constituencies in a few days. He said that out of a total of 297 provincial assembly constituencies in Punjab, only seven constituencies' elections were postponed. They said several party workers had defeated elected members of the district and provincial governments in these elections.
The PPP is holding its party elections throughout the country. The first phase commenced in the Punjab. Elections in Sindh, the NWFP and Balochistan would be held on June 10, August 12 and October 20, respectively. In the second phase, the elected union council and provincial constituency office bearers would elect the district and central office bearers.
