His decision to quit the captaincy of the team was understandable; because it was effecting his batting performance. Many a batsman have given up captaincy to save their batting reputation. Sachin and Jayasuria are just two to name for example.
But Inzamam's decision to quit from ODIs is very unpatriotic. He has still a few years' class batting left in him, and it is not fair to deny Pakistan his services as a batsman at a crucial time. That is a disservice to the country. One can understand the highly charged emotional circumstances under which he has taken that snap decision after losing to Ireland.
It requires some deeper analysis and cool thinking before finalising it. After all cricket is a game of uncertainties. Once we had lost to Bangladesh and had not taken it so seriously. Then why are we so upset this time? It is true that we could not go to the next round. So what? That is not the end of the world. India have also not progressed to that round. Now the task ahead of us is to rise from the ashes and rebuild a team, which could regain the glory. And in my opinion he can play an important role as a middle order batsman for some years to come.
He can then retire in full glory. This is not an appropriate time for him to retire. I request him to reconsider his decision in the best interests of Pakistan cricket. May be the persons who could really influence him to change his mind are, President Pervez Musharraf, coming head of PCB and probably Ramiz Raja. I for one will feel sad to lose him as a batsman. After all he has made himself available for test matches, then why not for ODIs also?
