One in 10 Internet users was a victim of online fraud last year, according to a survey released on March 26. The government-backed campaign group, Get Safe Online issued the following tips on its Web site to protect people from fraud:
-- Keep your passwords secret. Use different ones for each site. Choose passwords that mix letters, symbols and numbers.
-- Buy anti-virus software and keep it updated.
-- Use a firewall to create a buffer between your computer and the Internet. It helps guard against hackers and viruses.
-- Don't open attachments in emails from people you don't know - they could contain viruses.
-- Don't click on anything in a spam email and don't reply to them. Be wary of online hoaxes.
-- Upgrade your computer's operating system.
-- Newer versions are generally safer.
-- Be careful about which sites you visit and the programs you download.
-- Secure your wireless network.
-- Beware of fake Web sites. Don't enter financial details unless the web address starts with "https://" and there is a small padlock in the frame of the web browser window.
