The federal cabinet, which is scheduled to meet on April 11 (today) with Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz in the chair, is likely to approve 'constituencies redrawing plan' apparently to 'facilitate' ruling party candidates in general elections, well-placed sources told Business Recorder here on Tuesday.
"The Election Commission has forwarded a draft bill proposing amendments to the Delimitation of Constituencies Act, 1974 in order to bring provisions of the Act in conformity with Articles 51, 106 and 218 of the Constitution as amended by the Legal Framework Order, 2002," they added.
Sources said the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs has proposed amendments to sections 4, 5, 8 and 9 of the Act in light of the Election Commission's recommendations.
Business Recorder made several phone calls to have the comments of Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs but unfortunately his PRO disconnected calls without informing if the minister was ready to talk or not.
According to sources, the cabinet would discuss current political and judicial crisis in the light of the ensuing elections besides stand-off with the administration of Jamia Hafza for which different options, including use of force are under consideration.
Sources said the cabinet would also approve 10 percent employment quota for women, extended for all posts across the board, in addition to their participation in selection on open merit basis. It is pertinent to note that the government has already allocated 10 percent quota for women for the CSS, they maintained.
They said the cabinet is also expected to approve technology-based industrial vision and strategy for Pakistan's socio-economic development. The cabinet would approve the memorandum of understanding (MoU) in the field of sports between the Sports Secretariat of Argentina and the Sports Ministry of Pakistan, they added.
Sources said the cabinet would also approve Pakistan Health Research Council Bill, 2007, which would now work as an autonomous organisation and the overall control of the proposed PHRC would vest in its board of governors.
