National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) has been leading in agriculture credit, retail and corporate banking over the years; also playing an important role in the development of agriculture sector and up-gradation of economy by pursuing very ambitious policy to further strengthen the rural sector.
NBP President Syed Ali Raza stated this while inaugurating a three-day workshop on 'Agricultural Finance' on Wednesday which was being organised by NBP Staff College Lahore, disclosed a NBP spokesman.
The workshop is being attended by Agricultural Field Officers (AFOs) of the bank who are provided with refresher training to disburse agricultural credit in their respective areas based on technical and financial viability.
While talking to the Branch Managers, ladies staff, MTOs and AFOs, the president NBP highlighted the dynamism of HR programme. "AFOs have made a great contribution in the agriculture sector, he added. According to him, agriculture has a great potential and that is why NBP is launching comprehensive agricultural financing scheme namely,'NBP Kisan Dost'.
The bank has inducted 100 AFOs in 2005-2006 after a thorough selection process to work on the agriculture side. The bank is planning to reach the doorsteps of the farmers to facilitate them.
As agriculture contributes 23 percent in GDP of Pakistan economy and if we were able to promote the agriculture, a remarkable increase would be noticed in the GDP growth in future, he said.
Appreciating the selection process of MTOs/AFOs by Dr Mirza Abrar Baig, Group Chief, HRM and AG, which is based on 100 percent merit, he said that out of a total of 10,000 applicants, only 1 percent has been selected through a highly transparent system.
