City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal and H.E. Phil Goff, Minister for trade, government of New Zealand will inaugurate the waste to energy biogas and fertiliser plant on Sunday (today), April 15, city government official told Business Recorder on Saturday.
The project is located at the Landhi Cattle Colony on four acres and will be able to convert waste into energy. The plant will generate about 25 MW and 1,4000 tons of dried organic fertiliser per day. The plant will produce energy and fertiliser, and provide social benefits, generate employment and help in eliminating pollution, improving environment, and saving a huge quantity of fresh water.
He said the project was established with the support of New Zealand Agency for International Development (NZAID) and New Zealand Government, adding that during the pilot project operation waste of around 7,000 buffaloes would be used.
He said the pilot phase of the project would yield around 200 Kilowatt (KW) of electricity, while Methane (natural gas) could also be converted to electricity. He said it was also believed that after getting scaled up, the project would be able to generate 30 Megawatt (MW) of electricity.
He said the proposed project would produce around 15 tons of enriched organic fertiliser per day, which was invaluable source of plant nutrition for greening the city, and would help in improving soil conditions and performance of inorganic fertiliser.
Regarding saving of huge quantity of water, he said that thousands of cubic of water used for washing away the dung could be saved for irrigation and other purposes.
The City District Government Karachi (CDGK) gave a green signal to the New Zealand firm Empower Consultant Limited (ECL) for setting up a bio gas demonstration plant to minimise energy crisis in the city. He said the firm had been striving for setting up the plant for the past seven years, and had formally contacted the numerous governments and concerned authorities in this connection.
