Punjab Governor Lieutenant General Khalid Maqbool (Retd) said that Multan is an area of big landlord families including Gilanis, Khakwanis, Qureshis, Gardezis, Syeds, Noons and others in Multan.
But they never contributed for the development, expansion and running of Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) and they are accountable and answerable before the masses as to what did they do for their welfare.
However present regime has released a grant of Rs 700 million to BZU this year and the volume of funds would be raised to Rs 1 billion gradually from the next year especially helping the commencement of computer and architecture classes in the university.
Governor Punjab endorsed and highlighted the great services of President Pervez Musharraf, Premier Shaukat Aziz for people of Pakistan without mentioning a single word of praise to Punjab chief minister at a political-cum-public meeting held here at Multan Public School, boys branch on Saturday.
The gathering was much organised, fully packed and crowded than Punjab chief minister's last public meeting held at Qila Qasim Bagh stadium on March 30. Commenting on the speeches of deserving students of vocational training institutes who got skills under Prime Minister Employment Scheme, the governor said "keeping in view of these speeches there is no need of politicians".
The governor was looking very aggressive on unabated increase in poverty and he portrayed himself a mass leader having radical pro-people sentiments. He said that despite making all efforts, flowing funds for uplift projects and opening new schools, job opportunities for teachers, the poverty still grips the society.
The Punjab government introduced education reforms, released loans, provided most modern medical treatment facilities and helped people through Baitul Maal but poverty graph could not be reduced. The religion of Islam negates poverty even it warns the followers that poverty is a path to infidelity and the government tried her best to provide relief to the general public but poverty level remained developing in the country.
"Some person holds big public meetings and announce development projects worth billions of rupees, but still deprives from getting such public sympathy of respect and love but today's gathering is a reflection of commitments and sincerity because we do not believe on flimsy slogans or speeches except on practical work."
He said such a public response cannot be witnessed in governments' public meetings. While bifurcating the poverty, he said there is poverty of wealth and justice. The governor said that the present government has prevented violence against women to stop injustice against them including honour killing and enacted Women Protection Act and protected rights of minorities. The governor said all these steps were taken for the welfare of masses but some people were trying to undo the entire agenda and making efforts to stop well-organised uplift activities.
These people are against the masses uplift and appear from lawyers or seminary students and continuously trying to destabilise the government, but you people foil their agenda, he asked the people. President Pervez Musharraf is very sincere and kind with nation and the success of Musharraf, Shaukat Aziz is the success of masses.
He asked the people to shout slogans in favour of Musharraf and Aziz. Later, Governor Khalid Maqbool distributed cheques worth Rs 20,000 grant to each under the Prime Ministers' Employment Scheme among the 3,000 skilled students of 12 districts.
The Punjab Vocational Training Institutes provided training to deserving students after selection on the criteria of poverty. The Punjab Baitul Maal Managing Director Brigadier Sarfraz, Khawaja Awais and a number of skilled students also spoke on the occasion that why the scheme proved helpful in developing their career.
CONVOCATION Addressing the 8th convocation of Bahauddin Zakariya University, the governor assured that federal and provincial government would provide maximum funds to BZU for launching new departments of biotechnology and molecular biology. The main focus in higher education is research and Rs 20 billion were allocated for this purpose. Appreciating the free and fair BZU educational environment, the governor said the environment really satisfied him.
