The Ministry of Narcotics Control has so far spent Rs 45.152 million on Model Drug Addiction and Treatment Centers and will demand the same budgetary allocation for these two centers for the next fiscal.
Sources told Business Recorder on Saturday that the budgetary allocation of Rs 45 million was fully utilised by the Ministry on Model Drug Addiction Treatment Centers of Islamabad and Quetta. They said that the ministry has started a project on 'Creating Mass Awareness Against Drug Abuse' at a cost of Rs 39 million to create awareness about the harmful effects of drugs.
Another project on 'Community Participation in Drug Demand Reduction' has been initiated with a cost of Rs 30 million for engaging local communities in drug demand reduction.
Treatment programme for injecting drug users' was started in the cities of Quetta and Rawalpindi worth Rs 19.5 million for treating drug abusers and those who have high risk of HIV/AIDS. While the ministry is running a project to create awareness through mobile service units in far-flung areas. Documentary programmes were also started to create awareness among the public, they said.
This project was started in most affected areas of the country especially interior Sindh, NWFP and Punjab to provide basic information regarding drug prevention and treatment, they said. They said that 'Focus Drug Abuse Prevention' project was started with the cost of Rs 30 million, which will be completed in June.
